Gander River News

Spring 2005

Mr. St. Louis with a nice Brook Trout !

GREAT TRAVEL NEWS!

There is an additional new "low fare" carrier connecting 40 destinations on the east coast of the USA with Newark.
Independence Air hubbing out of Washington,Dulles, IAD is now serving 40 cities and adding several more US west coast destinations in the spring.
We have had several flights with these new folks and we find their equipment to be new and clean and the inflight service to be excellent!
We highly recommend that you give them a try, you'll love the "celebrity" flight safety briefings. www.flyi.com.

This means thay you can now connect with that Continental Airlines direct service from
Newark to St.John's from a lot more places!

We now have a north /south flight service into Newfoundland which will eliminate that unnecessary travel through Montreal or Toronto. Those places were never really on the way to here unless you were coming from western Canada. It was just a nuisance to endure between you and some of the world's best Atlantic Salmon fishing.

Now, thanks to Continental Airlines, you have a direct link to Newfoundland through New York (Newark)from over 400 North American departure points.
This new connection will be ideal for booking a trip to North Americas oldest city and then perhaps adding a few fishing days while you are here.

More new airline connections,

Provincial Airlines INTRODUCES ENHANCED SCHEDULE!

Provincials new schedule will see a number of enhancements. New flights from Halifax to Gander.

Our river report:

In 2004, a fall retention of one fish had been added to the Hook & Release season on our river.

We were happy to entertain several new guests from Arizona , Indiana, Ohio and some others from Florida, France, illinois and Mexico in the fall season. Not all fished, but most of those who did caught fish.

We have many good dates for the 2005 season available.

This report brought to you in memory of Otis Gillingham, a longtime businessman, guide and anglers friend.

Reported by Harry Bauld,in hunting guides "Camo". Harry is one of the great guides on staff at Gander River Outfitters Inc.

Based on past experience, we are expecting an excellent fishing season in 2005 due to the fact that Salmon returning this year will be from the stocks of the 2001 and 2002 runs which were quite good.

The Ladies Only fishing week will be offered again in 2005. Dates will be offered on request, so put your group together and give us a call.. Click here to see the ladies week special.

We hope to see you on the river soon.....Lanita Carter, Camp Manager.

Our guest, Bill Wilson of New York, managed to bag this fine Bull Moose on Day 1 of his hunt and spent the remainder of the week becoming well acquainted with the fall Salmon.

Our bookings for 2005 are well ahead of other years and those interested in joining us are advised to book sooner rather than later. Call 1-888-725-6663 Toll Free.

Our fall fishing was also a spectacular success and we are happy to report that we were hooking fish right up to and including the final day of our 2004 season.

More Good News on air travel: Several US carriers are now connecting through Halifax to the Provincial Airlines Gander flights.

Continental, Delta and North West and United are now offering some real good rates to Halifax. Some of these flights arrive in time to connect with the new Provincial Airlines and JETSGO flights to Gander.
Besides the option of using points, many people are finding that ticket prices are running about half of what they were when running through Toronto and Montreal. This means better service into Newfoundland in 2005.

We will keep you up dated as more news on these flights becomes available.CanJet will also increase Halifax-Deer Lake service and introduce new non-stop service (Saturdays and Sundays) between Toronto and St. John's in June.

CanJet Airlines will also offer daily non-stop flights between Halifax and Montreal and Halifax and Ottawa.
Call us at 1-888-725-6663 for booking and information.

The lodge 1-709-424-1600 telephone has been disconnected for the season until June 2005.

We are working with a travel agent who has arranged some super seat prices.

Photo from the Somerset NJ Fly Fishing show January 24-26 in the USA.
The interest in Fly Fishing seems stronger than ever and our list of contacts after the shows continues to grow. In light of the troubles in the world, it seems that more people are opting to stay at home in North America this year and plan trips for 2005. & We were happy to see our long time clients and friends and we are looking forward to greeting our new guests this coming season.

Great News!
We have been chosen to be featured in a new book called " Canada's Classic Fishing Lodges"
. We are pleased to be listed in some very good company and in fact have been selected as one of just 17 lodges to be listed in the book. It is published by Boston Mills Press and we now have some of these books available in our online giftshop.

Since we began our Gander River reports our world has changed a lot. The value of family and time spent together has taken on a whole new meaning. Things that were important aren't and things that weren't important have suddenly moved to the top of the list. On 9-11-01 our small town of Gander and many other towns in Newfoundland became directly involved as 77 large jets showed up at various airports. Gander had 39 jets on the ground and a small town of 15,000 suddenly had 7500 guests.

In true Newfoundland tradition, our people shared what they had and did their best to make the unexpected travelers comfortable and welcome. Some were with us for almost a week. Here is a photo from that day, as you can see, parking was a problem..

 Fun from the Fall

Our 2005 hunting season has been booking very well. We still have several good spots open for hunting and expect them to fill before long.

In photo, Joe Patterson, our guest, dances a few steps with Lanita after a day in the woods.

Normally, we only book 4-5 hunters per week, even though our lodge can accommodate 12 guests. This allows us the flexibility to accommodate companions and also the ability to move your dates slightly in cases when something urgent takes place. Many lodges either can not or will not do this for you.

See our page on what to look for when booking a trip from the link below.

Joe Patterson and his hunting partner Bill Sams enjoying dinner with Lanita. Joe, who is 91, is one of the finest moose callers we have ever heard. It must be the tie, which he is never without.

These boys moose hunt a lot together and Bill will tell you some stories about Joe and his famous tie.

A few tips for you if you are considering booking a trip with us or anyone else...click here!

In answer to the many questions we get about where we are located, we have included a few maps to help you find us.

St.John's, our capital is about 4 1/2 hours flying time west of London and can be reached by a direct flight 4-5 times per week.

Flying from the USA, you can reach us through any major city. Most flights will route through one of the following: Toronto, Montreal, Newark or Boston to either Halifax or St. John's.

Gander is located approx. 110 air miles NW of St. John's, the driving distance between them is double that (220 miles). Most air tickets will be the same price quote for either Gander or St. John's, you want Gander.

Remember, that your destination airport is Gander, Newfoundland, (CYQX) in travel agent code

This map shows where Gander River Lodge is located in relation Gander. Our lodge is just up the river from the ocean in Gander Bay.

Gander Airport and the town of Gander are located in the centre of the map where the yellow symbol is shown.

Our Woodland Caribou hunts are done from a camp 45 miles south of Gander airport. You fly direct from the Caribou camp to the Gander River Lodge. It takes about 45 minutes, bring your camera.
